Language Studies Indonesia : Language Immersion Programs in Jakarta, Indonesia

Language Studies Indonesia's Language Immersion Program in Jakarta, Indonesia offers more than a chance to learn a language abroad. It offers an opportunity to get away from the "familiar" and go on an "unusual journey." Come and "Live the Language."

Unlike countries in Europe and the Americas (which attract thousands of foreign travellers and students annually), Indonesia is well off the "western radar screen." In the world's fourth most-populous country, there are few Western visitors. Therefore, a study-trip to Indonesia offers a quieter, more unique and personal experience . . . and the promise of "true" language immersion.

YOUR HOME | As a student of the LSI Immersion Program, you will be placed at LSI's Official Homestay - Pesona Guest House Jakarta - where you will find a truly social host family, happy and excited to involve you in the day-to-day activities of the household. On weekday evenings, you will have the opportunity to participate in the spontaneous activities of the family - whether that be going out to sing Indonesian songs at a local karaoke establishment, going to see an Indonesian movie at a local theatre, or just spending an evening at home conversing in Bahasa Indonesia.

YOUR LANGUAGE SCHOOL | You will be assigned your own private Language Instructor/Mentor for the duration of your Program. On weekday mornings, after enjoying a sumptuous Indonesian breakfast at Pesona, you will walk two blocks through the neighborhood to the LSI LANGUAGE CENTRE, where your Mentor will deliver you your daily, private Bahasa Indonesia lesson.

AFTERNOON CULTURAL ACTIVITIES | Each weekday afternoon, you and your Mentor will "hit the road" to pursue an "Indonesian" activity. Afternoon cultural activities will include such things as Indonesian Cooking Classes and Traditional Batik-Making Classes. These activities will provide you the essential "contexts" you need in order to practice your newly-acquired language skills in 'real-life' situations outside of the classroom.

CULTURAL EXCURSIONS | Cultural Excursions will be interspersed throughout your Program. Excursions within Jakarta will include trips to cultural sites and museums, walking tours in historic districts, shopping at traditional markets, and eating at landmark restaurants. Excursions outside of the City will involve journeying to the rural villages of West Java (the area surrounding the Capital) . . . providing you with unparalleled opportunities for authentic interaction with local farmers, operators of cottage industries, and traditional workers of every other sort.

Immersion Programs of three weeks or longer also include a TWO-DAY BEACH VACATION on a tiny tropical island in the Java Sea (off the north coast of the island of Java). White sand, crystal blue water, snorkeling and canoeing are all on offer, providing a welcome antidote to your intensive regimen of study.

The dual mission of the "Excursion Component" of the Program is to (1) heighten your awareness of the "traditional lifestyles" which remain a reality to for some 200 million Indonesians, and (2) help you to develop a fuller appreciation of the benefits and drawbacks of progress - those things we have "gained" . . . and those things which are "lost forever."

The LSI LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM will not connect you with European travellers and students. What it will do is allow you to form meaningful relationships with Indonesians - relationships with your host family at Pesona Guest House, with your private Language Instructor/Mentor at LSI, and with all the Indonesians you meet along the way!

You will return home with a working knowledge of the the world's sixth most widely-spoken language ; with a better understanding of the culture and gentle people of Indonesia . . . and, hopefully, with memories, friendships and influences which will impact your life forever.

Come to Indonesia and Live the Life." Come and "Live the Language!"
